Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a standards-approved technology for speeding up network traffic flow and making it easier to manage. MPLS solutions involve setting up a specific path for a given sequence of packets, identified by a label put in each packet, thus saving the time needed for a router to look up the forwarding address to the next node. MPLS services are called multi-protocol because they work with the Internet Protocol (IP), Asynchronous Transport Mode (ATM), and frame relay network protocols. In addition to moving traffic faster overall, MPLS service makes it easy to manage a network for quality of service (QOS). For these reasons, the technique is being readily adopted as networks continue to bundle more and different mixtures of traffic.

Traditionally, remote offices have been connected with Point-to-Point T1, Point-to-Point DS3 circuits, or Frame Relay. A lot of financial traffic still goes over Point-to-Point circuits because Point-to-Point has historically been considered the most secure method of transfer. However, MPLS solutions have implemented many security enhancements over the last few years allowing MPLS services to replace the more traditional solutions and save companies thousands of dollars in the process. It is strongly suggested that business owners with multiple business locations discuss the potential benefits of implementing an MPLS service with their IT department.

An MPLS network is secure and less expensive than Point-to-Point or Frame Relay solutions. MPLS services use a secure tunnel through the public Internet. Each MPLS provider has what is called a “cloud” in the Internet that provides secure and reliable Voice & Data traffic to pass through to its final destination. In a Point-to-Point or frame situation, all traffic has to pass through the main hub and then go to its final destination. With MPLS services, each office can “talk” to each other directly without having to pass through the main hub.

If you have 3 or more offices and you wish to connect them together with Voice & Data, an MPLS solution is often the best solution for your business. Contact an MPLS consultant at TelecomMedic today to discuss the benefits of implementing MPLS services and to discuss the technical details to ensure security and quality of service.
