Long Distance service can be broken into two major categories: Switched Long Distance and Dedicated Long Distance.
Switched Long Distance allows companies to choose a long distance carrier with their local telephone company. When a long distance call is placed, the carrier’s computer switches the call to the appropriate long distance company (AT&T, Sprint, Qwest, etc.). For Dedicated Long Distance, a dedicated circuit such as a T1 or DS3 is brought directly from the long distance provider into the business and your local provider no longer provides the switching service. This results in a greatly reduced long distance rate. There is a monthly fee associated with the dedicated circuit and the PBX must accommodate the circuit. Many companies that have large long distance requirements find that a Dedicated Long Distance solution is more cost effective in the long run.
International long distance rates are provided in both the switched and dedicated solutions (at a different rate than domestic long distance).
