Point To Point

Point To Point

Typical Applications: Interoffice VoIP, Traditional Analog Voice Channels between Remote Locations, Disaster Recovery, Storage Area Network Implementation (SAN)

We like to call a Point-to-Point circuit “two cans and a string.” It is quite simply a private line that connects two points together and is always on. Companies pay a monthly charge based on the distance between the two points and the speed required.

In today’s telecom landscape, the smallest private line is a Point-to-Point T1. A T1 private line provides 1.544 Meg of bandwidth between two locations. A Point-to-Point T1 is also the most common and flexible form of Point-to-Point connection, as it can be provided on copper wire or fiber. Scalability is provided via multiple T1 private lines, or by expanding to a Point-to-Point DS3. However, with the prices of Ethernet continuing to drop, many companies are finding that using an Ethernet Point-to-Point circuit is more cost effective than installing a Point-to-Point DS3.

A Point-to-Point is typically used to connect remote offices for Voice or Data communications. Most PBX systems can accommodate a T1 private line and provide for unlimited Voice & Data communications between offices for a flat monthly rate. This reduces the traditional per-minute voice rate.
