Dedicated Internet Access
Business
Ethernet has long been used inside
your office to connect computers
together. Today it is being used
more and more as an Internet or
Point-to-Point/MPLS
solution for connecting to the
World Wide Web. Since the technology in
most business networks is already
Ethernet based, business Ethernet
has become an extremely popular Internet technology over the last
few years, because it is very easy
to connect to your local computer
network.
Today's most
popular business Ethernet technology
is Ethernet over Copper (EoC)
which is really just a very fast
version of DSL. It is distance
sensitive and uses Ethernet
technology over regular copper wire,
so the further away your business is
from a central office, the slower the
connection is. However, with more
and more central offices offering
this technology, many businesses are
able to get incredibly fast service
with high bandwidth for a fraction
of the prices they are accustomed
to.
The most common
form of EoC is a 10
Mbps connection and if your business
is within an adequate distance from
the central office, this solution may
be the best and most cost effective. However, due to
its distance limitations, it is best
to talk to an expert to determine if
your office(s) can take advantage of
this type of connection.
Traditional
Ethernet services are sold in 10
Mbps, 100 Mbps, and 1 Gbps (GigE)
sizes. This is usually delivered
over Fiber connections. Some
Ethernet service providers offer
EoC solutions in
smaller increments than 10 Meg, such
as 2, 5, and 6 Mbps.
Finding the right solution for your
business and determining what is
offered in your area is the key to
this new and emerging technology.
Ethernet can be
used for Internet or for connecting
offices. In today’s
marketplace, it is normally less
expensive than the traditional
DS3
connections. Usually, a
100 Mbps Ethernet connection is
around the same price as a
full 45 Mbps DS3 Internet
connections. If you are currently
using a
DS3 connection or looking to
upgrade, contact TelecomMedic and
we will present all
the options based on your needs and location(s).
For long
haul
data, Metro Ethernet
can be used to connect
individual offices. Instead of using
T1s
and
DS3s,
many companies are finding that
Ethernet can be a lower cost
solution if Fiber is available. If
Fiber is not available, it can also
be sold as an Ethernet over T1
technology (laying
the Ethernet connection over
multiple T1s). This is often another
creative method to cut costs
while improving service...often an
attractive proposition for our
clients.
