INTEGRATED T1

INTEGRATED T1

Typical Applications: Small to Medium size businesses with heavy voice traffic, call centers, support centers, etc.

Integrated Access lines, otherwise known as Integrated Flex T1 or just (IA) have become extremely popular since the Telecommunications Act of 1996. At that time, the CLECs started providing integrated access services that provided both Voice and Internet over the same small business T1 circuits.

A T1 line is simply 24 phone/internet channels adding up to 1.544 Meg. For example, an integrated flex T1 could be supplied as 12 phone lines and 12 bonded channels providing a static bandwidth of 756K of Internet. In the early days, these circuits were always static, just like traditional T1s. If you wanted to change the configuration you had to call your phone vendor to make that desired change.

Today integrated access services are commonly provided as a dynamic product that uses all 24 lines for both Voice & Internet in an integrated T1 service. If you need to use all 24 channels for Voice, you would have no Internet access. Likewise, if none of the phone lines are in use, the full T1 of Internet access would be available. This provides a flexibility benefit when using integrated access services.

This type of circuit also provides much better Internet service than a DSL or Cable modem because the Internet service is guaranteed for both upload and download speeds. DSL and Cable Modems have a stated upload and download speeds with a paragraph of disclaimers that state “up to.” The speed is not guaranteed, and circuit distance and congestion can lead to different speeds at different times of day. In addition, DSL and Cable modems typically do not have a Service Level Agreement (SLA) associated with them.

It is often hard for companies to determine when an Integrated flex T1 may be best for their business needs and what options they should choose when acquiring service. Contact a TelecomMedic expert and we will provide the best T1 prices from multiple T1 quotes and help answer all your questions to ensure you are making the best business phone service decision.
